Tooth Extraction Post-Operative Instructions

Immediate Care & Bleeding Control

• Gauze Pressure: Bite down firmly on the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for 30 to 45 minutes immediately following your appointment.
• Persistent Bleeding: If oozing or bleeding continues, place a fresh gauze pad over the site and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. Repeat as necessary until blood flow stops.

Protecting the Blood Clot (First 72 Hours)

• Activities to Avoid: For the first 72 hours, do NOT rinse vigorously, drink through a straw, smoke, consume alcohol, or brush teeth directly adjacent to the extraction site. These actions can dislodge or dissolve the blood clot and hinder healing.
• Exercise Restrictions: Limit physical exercise for the first 24 hours. Elevated blood pressure can cause renewed bleeding from the site.

Managing Swelling & Pain

• Ice Therapy: Swelling and mild pain are normal post-surgery. Apply an ice pack (or an unopened bag of frozen peas/corn) to the outside of the face over the area to keep swelling minimal. Swelling typically subsides after 48 hours.
• Pain Medication: Take all pain relief medications strictly as directed. Alternate Ibuprofen and prescribed pain medication as instructed by Dr. Black and our surgical assistants.

Diet & Hydration

• Day of Surgery: Drink plenty of fluids and focus on soft, nutritious foods on the day of your extraction.
• Returning to Normal Foods: You may gradually return to a normal diet as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.

Oral Hygiene & Recovery

• Resume Dental Routine (After 24 Hours): Starting 24 hours post-procedure, resume gentle brushing and flossing daily. Keeping your mouth clean speeds up healing and prevents infection.
• Normal Recovery Timeline: You should feel much better after a few days and resume normal daily routines.

When to Call Our Office
