Dental Implant Post-Operative Instructions
Proper home care following dental implant placement is vital for optimal healing and long-term implant success. Please follow these guidelines carefully.
Immediate Post-Surgery Care
- Protect the Surgical Site: Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound on the day of surgery. You may notice a small metal healing abutment protruding through the gum tissue—do not disturb it.
- Prosthesis / Dentures: Removable appliances (such as partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures) should not be worn immediately following surgery for at least 10 days, as discussed during your pre-operative consultation.
Managing Bleeding & Swelling
- Bleeding Control: Slight bleeding or reddish saliva is normal for the first 24 hours. If excessive bleeding occurs, place a firm gauze pad directly over the site and bite down firmly for 30 minutes. Repeat with fresh gauze for another 30 minutes if needed.
- Swelling Reduction: Facial swelling is a normal reaction to surgery. Apply an ice pack (or ice wrapped in a towel) continuously to the cheek near the surgical area as much as possible for the first 36 hours.
Dietary Guidelines
- Day of Surgery: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid hot liquids or foods. Stick to a soft food diet on the day of your procedure.
- Normal Diet Transition: You may gradually return to a normal diet as tolerated. However, DO NOT eat anything hard or crunchy at the implant site for at least 2 weeks.
Pain Management & Medications
- Pain Relief: Begin taking prescribed or recommended pain medication as soon as local anesthesia begins to wear off. For moderate pain, over-the-counter Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) or Tylenol may be used as directed. For severe pain, take prescribed medication strictly as instructed.
- Antibiotics: If prescribed antibiotics, complete the entire course as directed to protect against infection.
- Important Safety Note: Do not take any medication if you are allergic to it or have been advised against taking it by your doctor.
Oral Hygiene Routine
- Gentle Cleaning: Good oral hygiene is essential for healing. Brush your remaining teeth and the metal healing abutments gently starting the day after surgery.
- Salt Water Rinses: Beginning the day after surgery, rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) 4 to 5 times daily, especially after meals.
- Prescription Mouthwash: 24 hours post-procedure, begin using your prescribed Peridex (Chlorhexidine) mouth rinse as directed on the bottle for 2 weeks.
Activity & Exercise Restrictions
- Rest & Recovery: Keep physical activity to a minimum for the first few days following surgery. Vigorous exercise can cause throbbing or renewed bleeding; discontinue physical activity immediately if this occurs.
- Energy Levels: Reduced food intake during recovery can lower overall stamina, making rest crucial.
